What are Nickel Alloys?
Nickel alloys are metals based on nickel – not steels – alloyed with copper, chromium, iron, molybdenum, tungsten or cobalt. Nickel’s stable face-centred cubic structure keeps these alloys tough from cryogenic temperatures to over 1,000 °C, and the alloying elements tailor them for a particular job: copper for seawater and hydrofluoric acid (Monel), chromium for oxidation and high-temperature strength (Inconel), molybdenum and chromium for the most aggressive acids and chlorides (Hastelloy).

Frequently Asked Questions – Nickel Alloys
What are nickel alloys?
Nickel alloys are nickel-based metals alloyed with elements such as copper, chromium, iron, molybdenum, tungsten or cobalt. Main families include pure nickel 200/201, Monel, Inconel, Incoloy and Hastelloy.
Is nickel alloy the same as nickel steel?
No. Nickel alloys are nickel-based, usually with more than 30–40% nickel. Nickel steels are iron-based steels with a few percent nickel added. They have very different corrosion resistance and properties.
What is the difference between Monel, Inconel and Hastelloy?
Monel is nickel-copper and excels in seawater and hydrofluoric acid. Inconel is nickel-chromium(-iron) and is chosen for high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. Hastelloy is nickel-molybdenum-chromium and resists the most aggressive acids and chlorides.
Which ASTM specification covers nickel alloy fittings and flanges?
Butt-weld fittings in nickel alloys are covered by ASTM B366 / ASME SB366, and forged flanges and forged fittings by ASTM B564 / ASME SB564.
Which nickel alloy is best for seawater?
Monel 400 is widely used for seawater piping, pumps and valves. For higher strength, Monel K-500 is used, and Inconel 625 is chosen where crevice and pitting resistance in warm chlorides is critical.
Do you supply small quantities of nickel alloys?
Yes. ASC LLP supplies cut lengths, cut-to-size plate and small quantities of pipe, bar, fittings, flanges and fasteners in all main nickel alloys, with full certification.
