What is Tantalum?
Tantalum (Ta, atomic number 73) is a dense, ductile refractory metal – not a steel – with a melting point of about 3,017 °C and a density of 16.6 g/cm³. Its thin, stable oxide film makes it almost completely inert to hot hydrochloric, nitric and sulphuric acids, which is why tantalum is the material of choice for heat exchangers, condensers, bayonet heaters and linings in the harshest acid service.
Tantalum has three important limits: it is attacked by hydrofluoric acid and fluorides, fuming sulphuric acid (oleum) and hot strong alkalis; it oxidises in air above about 300 °C; and it can absorb hydrogen and become brittle if it is coupled galvanically to a less noble metal in acid.
Key Properties of Tantalum
- Melting point: ≈ 3,017 °C (5,463 °F)
- Density: 16.6 g/cm³ – about twice that of niobium
- Corrosion resistance: outstanding in hot HCl, HNO₃, H₂SO₄ (below oleum strength), bromine and chlorine
- Ductility: cold-formable and deep-drawable; supplied annealed
- Weldability: TIG or electron-beam welding in high-purity argon or vacuum
- Biocompatibility: used for implants and surgical devices

Frequently Asked Questions – Tantalum
What is tantalum used for?
Tantalum is used for chemical and pharmaceutical process equipment such as heat exchangers, condensers and linings, for electronic capacitors and sputtering targets, for medical implants, and as Ta-10W in high-temperature vacuum and aerospace parts.
Is tantalum a type of steel?
No. Tantalum is a pure refractory metal (element 73), not a steel. Tantalum products are made from unalloyed tantalum or tantalum alloys such as Ta-2.5W, Ta-10W and Ta-40Nb.
What attacks tantalum?
Tantalum is attacked by hydrofluoric acid and fluorides, fuming sulphuric acid (oleum) and hot strong alkalis. It oxidises in air above about 300 °C and can be embrittled by hydrogen if coupled to a less noble metal in acid.
Which ASTM standards cover tantalum?
ASTM B708 covers tantalum plate, sheet and strip, ASTM B365 rod and wire, ASTM B521 seamless and welded tubes, and ASTM B364 ingots.
What is the difference between R05200 and R05400 tantalum?
Both are unalloyed tantalum. R05200 is electron-beam or vacuum-arc melted, while R05400 is made by powder metallurgy and has a finer grain size. Both have the same minimum mechanical properties.
Why choose Ta-2.5W or Ta-10W instead of pure tantalum?
Tungsten raises strength. Ta-2.5W allows thinner walls for the same pressure while keeping tantalum-like corrosion resistance; Ta-10W is the strongest grade and is used for high-temperature and highly loaded parts.
Do you supply both seamless and welded tantalum tubes?
Yes. ASC LLP supplies seamless and welded tantalum and tantalum alloy tubes to ASTM B521 in all five grades.
