ASC LLP, Mumbai, supplies tantalum plate, sheet, strip and foil to ASTM B708 / ASME SB708 in unalloyed tantalum (R05200, R05400) and the tantalum alloys Ta-2.5W, Ta-10W and Ta-40Nb. Material comes as full sheets or cut to size, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates. See our full tantalum product range.

What Are Tantalum Plates & Tantalum Sheet?

Tantalum plates and tantalum sheet are flat products of tantalum, a refractory metal with a density of 16.6 g/cm³ and a melting point of 3,017 °C. The most common grades, R05200 and R05400, are unalloyed (pure) tantalum. Tungsten or niobium is added only where more strength or lower cost is needed. Tantalum is chosen mainly for its outstanding resistance to hot acids – it is often called the most corrosion-resistant metal in chemical service.

Corrosion Resistance – Where Tantalum Works and Where It Doesn’t

  • Excellent: hydrochloric, hydrobromic, nitric and sulphuric acids (up to high concentration and temperature), wet chlorine and bromine, most organic acids and chloride solutions.
  • Avoid: hydrofluoric acid and fluorides, fuming sulphuric acid (SO₃ / oleum), hot concentrated alkalis and hot phosphoric acid containing fluoride.
  • Hydrogen: avoid galvanic contact with active metals – tantalum can absorb hydrogen and become brittle.
  • Temperature: tantalum oxidises in air above about 300 °C, so high-temperature use must be in vacuum or inert gas.

What is the difference between tantalum plate and sheet?

Under ASTM B708, sheet is 0.13–4.7 mm (0.005–0.1875 in) thick and 152 mm or wider, strip is the same thickness but under 152 mm wide, and plate is thicker than 4.7 mm.

What is the tensile strength of tantalum sheet?

Annealed unalloyed tantalum (R05200 / R05400) under 1.52 mm thick has a minimum tensile strength of 207 MPa and yield of 138 MPa. Ta-10W sheet has a minimum tensile strength of 482 MPa.

Is tantalum plate an alloy?

The most common grades, R05200 and R05400, are unalloyed tantalum. Alloy grades are Ta-2.5W (R05252), Ta-10W (R05255) and Ta-40Nb (R05240).

Which acids is tantalum resistant to?

Tantalum resists hydrochloric, hydrobromic, nitric and sulphuric acid, wet chlorine and most organic acids. It is attacked by hydrofluoric acid, fuming sulphuric acid and hot concentrated alkalis.

Can you supply tantalum sheet cut to size?

Yes. ASC LLP supplies tantalum foil, sheet, strip and plate in full sizes or cut to size as blanks, discs and liners, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates.
