What is 6061 T6 Aluminium Plate?
6061 T6 aluminium plate is a heat-treatable aluminium alloy from the 6000 series, alloyed mainly with magnesium and silicon. It is the most widely used general-purpose structural aluminium because it combines medium-to-high strength, good corrosion resistance, good weldability and excellent machinability in one grade.
The T6 temper means the plate has been solution heat-treated and then artificially aged. This gives AA 6061 its full strength – a minimum tensile strength of about 290 MPa (42 ksi) – while keeping it light, at roughly one-third the weight of steel. Thicker plate is normally supplied as 6061 T651: the same T6 treatment followed by controlled stretching to relieve internal stress, so the plate stays flat when machined.

Key Features of 6061 T6 Aluminium Plate
- High strength-to-weight ratio – strong enough for structural parts at about one-third the density of steel (2.70 g/cm³).
- Good corrosion resistance – performs well in atmospheric and many marine environments.
- Excellent machinability – especially in T651 temper, which resists warping during CNC machining.
- Good weldability – weldable by TIG and MIG (commonly with 4043 or 5356 filler); note that welding reduces T6 strength in the heat-affected zone.
- Excellent anodizing response – takes clear and coloured anodized finishes well.
- Consistent, widely available grade – stocked in a wide range of thicknesses and sizes worldwide.

6061 T6 vs 6061 T651 – What Is the Difference?
Both tempers go through the same solution heat treatment and artificial ageing, so their chemistry and minimum strength are essentially the same. The difference is what happens next:
- 6061 T6 – solution heat-treated and aged. Used mainly for thinner sheet. It can contain residual stress, so thick T6 plate may distort when heavily machined.
- 6061 T651 – T6 plus stress relief by stretching the plate a controlled amount (typically 1.5–3% permanent set). This removes most internal stress, so the plate stays flat during CNC machining. T651 is the standard temper for plate 6.3 mm and thicker and for tooling plate.
For machined components, moulds, fixtures and precision parts, choose 6061 T651 plate. For formed or fabricated sheet parts, 6061 T6 sheet is usually the right choice.
Applications of 6061 T6 Aluminium Plate
Because of its balance of strength, weight and corrosion resistance, 6061 T6 aluminium plate is used across many industries:
- Machining & tooling: jigs, fixtures, moulds, machine bases and precision components (T651 plate).
- Transportation: truck and trailer bodies, railway parts, automotive frames and brackets.
- Marine: boat fittings, decks, gangways and superstructures.
- Construction & structural: platforms, bridges, walkways, frames and architectural components.

Frequently Asked Questions – 6061 T6 Aluminium Plate
What does T6 mean in 6061 T6 aluminium?
T6 is a temper designation meaning the alloy has been solution heat-treated and then artificially aged. This develops the full strength of 6061, giving a minimum tensile strength of about 290 MPa (42 ksi) and yield strength of about 240 MPa (35 ksi).
What is the difference between 6061 T6 and 6061 T651?
T651 is T6 material that has also been stretched to relieve internal stress. It has essentially the same strength but stays much flatter when machined, which is why plate 6.3 mm and thicker is usually supplied as T651.
Is 6061 T6 aluminium plate weldable?
Yes. 6061 T6 is readily welded by TIG or MIG, usually with 4043 or 5356 filler wire. Welding heat softens the area next to the weld, so welded joints have lower strength than the base T6 plate unless the part is re-heat-treated.
Which is stronger – 6061 T6 or 7075 T6?
7075 T6 is considerably stronger than 6061 T6, but 6061 has better corrosion resistance, weldability and formability and costs less. 6061 is chosen for general structural and machined parts; 7075 for highly stressed aerospace and tooling parts.
What standard covers 6061 T6 aluminium plate?
Sheet and plate are covered by ASTM B209 (ASME SB209 for pressure applications). Aerospace plate is supplied to AMS 4027. The UNS number is A96061 and the European designation is EN AW-6061 (Werkstoff 3.3211).
What is the density of 6061 T6 aluminium?
The density of 6061 aluminium is about 2.70 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), roughly one-third that of steel.
