ASTM A214 & ASME SA214 Carbon Steel Pipes – ERW Small-Bore Heat-Transfer Pipe

ASC LLP, Mumbai, supplies ASTM A214 / ASME SA214 carbon steel pipe: electric-resistance-welded (ERW), low-carbon steel in pipe sizes from NPS ⅛” to 2½” (up to 3″ OD), with EN 10204 3.1 certificates. For heat-exchanger tubes ordered by OD × BWG / minimum wall, see our SA214 heat-exchanger tubes page.

What is SA214 Material?

ASTM A214 / ASME SA214 covers electric-resistance-welded carbon steel tubes for heat exchangers, condensers and similar heat-transfer equipment, in sizes up to 3″ (76.2 mm) OD. The material is a low-carbon steel (C 0.18% max., Mn 0.27 – 0.63%). Tubes are heat-treated after welding to give a soft, uniform weld zone, with a maximum hardness of 72 HRB. When it is supplied in standard pipe dimensions, buyers call it A214 pipe or SA214 carbon steel pipe.

Because the specification is intended for tubes up to 3″ OD, A214 pipe is a small-bore product – up to NPS 2½” (73.0 mm OD). For larger welded carbon steel pipe, use ASTM A53 Type E or API 5L ERW – see our carbon steel welded pipes.

Properties of SA214 Carbon Steel Pipe

  • Heat-treated ERW: heat-treated at 900 °C (1650 °F) or higher after welding (650 °C or higher after cold drawing), so the weld is uniform with the parent metal.
  • Soft and formable: 72 HRB maximum, suitable for bending, flaring, flanging and expanding.
  • Good heat transfer: plain low-carbon steel conducts heat well (about 50 W/m·K).
  • Economical: ERW production makes SA214 cheaper than seamless A179 / SA179 for the same size.
  • Limits: carbon steel is not corrosion-resistant, and A214 is not a boiler or high-temperature specification.

A214 vs A179 vs A178 – Which One?

  • A214 / SA214 – ERW, for heat exchangers and condensers (this page).
  • A179 / SA179 – seamless cold-drawn, for the same heat-transfer duties where seamless is specified.
  • A178 / SA178 – ERW boiler and superheater tubes.
  • A53 Type E – ERW pipe for general and pressure piping in larger sizes.

Pipe dimensions per ASME B36.10M; plain-end weights for carbon steel. A214 tubes are ordered on minimum wall – when ordering in schedule sizes, state whether the schedule wall is nominal or minimum. NPS 3″ and larger are outside the A214 size range; use A53 Type E or API 5L.

Mechanical Requirements of SA214 Pipe

Property ASTM A214 / ASME SA214
Hardness 72 HRB max. (acceptance test)
Tensile / yield No tensile test required by A214
Flattening, flange & reverse-flattening tests Required
Pressure test Hydrostatic or non-destructive electric test on each length

Unlike A179, A214 does not list tensile values; acceptance is based on hardness and the flattening, flange and reverse-flattening tests.

Frequently Asked Questions – ASTM A214 Carbon Steel Pipe

What is SA214 material?

SA214 (ASTM A214) is an electric-resistance-welded low-carbon steel for heat-exchanger and condenser tubes. It contains carbon 0.18% max., manganese 0.27–0.63%, phosphorus and sulphur 0.035% max., and is heat-treated after welding to a maximum hardness of 72 HRB.

What sizes are available in A214 pipe?

ASTM A214 covers tubes up to 3″ (76.2 mm) OD, so A214 pipe is available from NPS 1/8″ to NPS 2-1/2″ (73.0 mm OD). Larger welded pipe is supplied to ASTM A53 Type E or API 5L.

What is the difference between A214 and A179?

A214 is electric-resistance welded and heat-treated; A179 is seamless and cold drawn. Both are low-carbon steels for heat exchangers and condensers with a 72 HRB maximum hardness. A214 is more economical; A179 is used where seamless tube is specified.

Does ASTM A214 have tensile requirements?

No. ASTM A214 does not require a tensile test. Acceptance is based on hardness (72 HRB max.), flattening, flange and reverse-flattening tests, and a hydrostatic or non-destructive electric test on each tube.

Can A214 be used for boiler tubes?

No. A214 is a heat-exchanger and condenser tube specification. ERW boiler and superheater tubes are supplied to ASTM A178 / ASME SA178.

What heat treatment does A214 require?

Welded A214 tubes are heat-treated at 900 °C (1650 °F) or higher after welding. Tubes that are cold drawn are heat-treated at 650 °C (1200 °F) or higher after the final cold draw.
