ASTM A106 Grade B Carbon Steel Pipes – ASME SA106 Gr B Seamless Pipe

ASC LLP, Mumbai, supplies ASTM A106 Grade B pipe (ASME SA106 Gr B) – seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. Pipe is available from ½” to 24″ NB (larger on request) in SCH 10 to XXS, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates. It is also available dual or triple certified to A106 B / A53 B / API 5L. See our full carbon steel range.

What is ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe?

ASTM A106 is the specification for seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service, NPS ⅛” to 48″. It has three grades – A, B and C – and Grade B is by far the most used. A106 pipe is always seamless (hot-finished or cold-drawn) and is suitable for bending, flanging and welding. ASME SA106 is the identical ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code version. A106 B is the standard carbon steel line pipe for refinery, petrochemical, power-plant and steam piping under ASME B31.1 and B31.3.

ASTM A106 Grade A vs Grade B vs Grade C

Property Grade A Grade B Grade C
Tensile strength, min. 330 MPa (48 ksi) 415 MPa (60 ksi) 485 MPa (70 ksi)
Yield strength, min. 205 MPa (30 ksi) 240 MPa (35 ksi) 275 MPa (40 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, longitudinal 35% 30% 30%
Elongation in 50 mm, transverse 25% 16.5% 16.5%
Carbon, max. 0.25% 0.30% 0.35%
Manganese 0.27 – 0.93% 0.29 – 1.06% 0.29 – 1.06%

Elongation values are the basic minimums for standard round or strip specimens; lower values apply to thin walls as per the specification. Grade B is the normal stock grade; Grade C is used where higher strength is needed.

Manufacture, Heat Treatment & Testing

  • Hot-finished pipe (most sizes over 2″): normally supplied without further heat treatment.
  • Cold-drawn pipe (small sizes, close tolerance): must be heat-treated at 650 °C (1200 °F) or higher after the final cold draw.
  • Tests: tension test, bend test (NPS 2 and under) or flattening test, hydrostatic test or non-destructive electric test on each length, plus dimensional and visual inspection.
  • NACE pipe: for sour service, A106 B can be supplied to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 or MR0103 with hardness control (22 HRC max.).

Temperature Limits

A106 B is suitable for high-temperature service, but prolonged exposure above about 425 °C (800 °F) can cause graphitisation of carbon steel. For higher temperatures, chrome-moly pipe such as A335 P11 or P22 is normally used. For low-temperature service, choose ASTM A333 Grade 6.

Frequently Asked Questions – ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe

What is ASTM A106 Grade B pipe?

ASTM A106 Grade B is seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. It has a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa (60 ksi) and minimum yield strength of 240 MPa (35 ksi) and is the most common pipe grade in refinery, petrochemical and power-plant piping.

What are the mechanical properties of ASTM A106 Grade B?

Minimum tensile strength is 415 MPa (60 ksi), minimum yield strength 240 MPa (35 ksi), and minimum elongation 30% longitudinal or 16.5% transverse in 50 mm.

What is the chemical composition of A106 Grade B?

A106 Grade B contains C 0.30% max., Mn 0.29–1.06%, P 0.035% max., S 0.035% max., Si 0.10% min., and Cu, Ni, Cr 0.40% max. each, Mo 0.15% max. and V 0.08% max. (Cu+Ni+Cr+Mo+V not more than 1.00%).

What is the difference between A106 and A53 pipe?

A106 is seamless only and intended for high-temperature service, with a minimum silicon content. A53 can be seamless or ERW and is used for general pressure and utility piping. Grade B of both has the same 415/240 MPa strength, and seamless pipe is often dual-certified to both.

Is A106 pipe seamless?

Yes. ASTM A106 covers only seamless pipe, either hot-finished or cold-drawn. Welded carbon steel pipe is supplied to specifications such as A53 Type E or API 5L.

What is the maximum temperature for A106 Grade B pipe?

A106 B is used for high-temperature service, but prolonged service above about 425 °C (800 °F) risks graphitisation. Above this range, chrome-moly pipe such as ASTM A335 P11 or P22 is normally specified. Design limits are set by the applicable code (ASME B31.1 or B31.3).
