What is Niobium?

Niobium (Nb, atomic number 41, formerly called columbium) is a soft, ductile refractory metal with a melting point of about 2,477 °C and a density of 8.57 g/cm³ – the lightest of the common refractory metals. It is highly resistant to most acids at moderate temperatures, easy to form and weld, and becomes superconducting below about 9.2 K, which makes it the base of NbTi and Nb₃Sn superconducting wire.

Two limits matter when choosing niobium: it oxidises in air above about 400 °C, so hot parts must run in vacuum or inert gas or be coated, and it is attacked by hydrofluoric acid, hot concentrated sulphuric acid and strong alkalis.

Key Properties of Niobium

  • Melting point: ≈ 2,477 °C (4,491 °F)
  • Density: 8.57 g/cm³ – about half that of tantalum
  • Corrosion resistance: excellent in hydrochloric, nitric and most organic acids; not suitable for HF or strong alkalis
  • Ductility: can be cold-rolled, deep-drawn and spun at room temperature
  • Weldability: TIG or electron-beam welding in high-purity argon or vacuum
  • Superconductivity: critical temperature ≈ 9.2 K (high-RRR grades for RF cavities)
  • Biocompatibility: used in implants and medical devices

Frequently Asked Questions – Niobium

Niobium is used for chemical-process equipment, superconducting wire and RF cavities, aerospace parts (especially the C-103 alloy), nuclear and liquid-metal systems, sputtering targets and as an alloying addition to steels and nickel alloys.
Yes, niobium resists hydrochloric, nitric and most organic acids at moderate temperatures. It is attacked by hydrofluoric acid, hot concentrated sulphuric acid and strong alkalis, and it oxidises in air above about 400 °C.
We supply niobium plate, sheet, coil and foil, bar, rod and wire, seamless and welded pipe and tube, fittings, flanges and fasteners in grades R04200, R04210, R04251, R04261, RRR niobium, C-103 and Nb-47Ti.
Yes. Niobium is readily welded by TIG or electron-beam welding, but only in a high-purity argon chamber or vacuum, because oxygen and nitrogen pick-up makes the weld brittle.
Yes. ASC LLP exports niobium products worldwide with EN 10204 3.1 certificates and secure export packing.
Both are unalloyed niobium. R04200 (Type 1) is reactor grade with tighter impurity limits; R04210 (Type 2) is commercial grade with slightly higher allowed impurities and lower cost.
Nb-1Zr is niobium with about 1% zirconium, designated R04251 (reactor grade) and R04261 (commercial grade). The zirconium raises strength and high-temperature performance compared with pure niobium.
ASTM B391 covers ingots, B392 bar, rod and wire, B393 strip, sheet and plate, and B394 seamless and welded tube. The C-103 niobium-hafnium alloy is covered by ASTM B652, B654 and B655.
