Nb-47Ti (NbTi) Bar, Rod & Billet – ASTM B884 Niobium-Titanium

ASC LLP, Mumbai, supplies Nb-47Ti (NbTi) niobium-titanium rod, bar and billet to ASTM B884. The alloy is 46–48% titanium, balance niobium, and is the standard superconducting alloy for MRI, NMR and accelerator magnet wire. It is also the stock from which Nb-47Ti fittings, adaptors and cryogenic components are machined. Material is supplied annealed, ultrasonic- and penetrant-tested, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates.

Which ASTM Standard Covers Nb-47Ti – B391, B393 or B884?

Nb-47Ti is covered by ASTM B884: niobium-titanium alloy billets, bar and rod for superconducting applications. The other niobium standards do not apply to Nb-Ti:

  • ASTM B391 – niobium and niobium-zirconium ingots (R04200, R04210, R04251, R04261)
  • ASTM B392 / B393 / B394 – niobium and Nb-1Zr bar, sheet / plate and tube
  • ASTM B884 – Nb-47Ti billet, bar and rod (this page)

Nb-47Ti Bar, Rod & Billet Sizes

Form Size range (ASTM B884) Typical use
Rod Over 13 mm to under 60 mm (0.5 – 2.5 in) Machined fittings, adaptors and small cryogenic parts
Bar 60 mm to under 150 mm (2.5 – 6 in) Larger machined components and wire-drawing stock
Billet 150 mm (6 in) and over Extrusion billets for multifilament superconducting wire

Cut lengths and machined blanks on request. Material is supplied clean, with ends marked for heat traceability.

Nb-47Ti Fittings Machined from Bar & Rod

Nb-47Ti is not produced as large-bore pipe or butt-weld fittings. Nb-47Ti fittings are machined to drawing from B884 rod and bar:

  • Adaptors, couplings and threaded connectors for cryogenic lines
  • Flanged transitions, bushes and supports for magnet and cryostat assemblies
  • Custom machined parts to customer drawing

For full details of machined parts see our Nb-47Ti fittings & components page.

Nb-47Ti Chemical Composition (ASTM B884)

Element Limit (ASTM B884, ingot)
Titanium (Ti) 46 – 48 %
Oxygen (O) 1,000 ppm max

Carbon (C) 200 ppm max
Iron (Fe) 200 ppm max
Nitrogen (N) 150 ppm max
Aluminium (Al) 100 ppm max

Copper (Cu) 100 ppm max
Nickel (Ni) 100 ppm max
Silicon (Si) 100 ppm max
Hydrogen (H) 45 ppm max

Impurity limits are tight because inclusions and interstitials damage the fine filaments drawn from Nb-Ti for superconducting wire.

Quality Requirements for Nb-47Ti (ASTM B884)

Requirement ASTM B884
Hardness Average of three readings below 170 HV (DPH)
Grain size, 0.5 – 2 in diameter ASTM 4.5 or finer
Grain size, over 2 – 4.5 in ASTM 2.5 or finer
Grain size, over 4 – 6 in ASTM 1.5 or finer
Internal soundness Ultrasonic test – no defects above 3% of diameter or 2.5 mm equivalent
Surface Liquid-penetrant test – no cracks or linear indications

B884 controls softness, grain size and soundness rather than tensile strength, because the material must be drawn down to very fine wire without breaking.

Physical & Superconducting Properties of Nb-47Ti

Property Value (approx.)
Density ≈ 6.0 g/cm³ (pure niobium 8.57 g/cm³)
Superconducting critical temperature (Tc) ≈ 9 – 10 K
Upper critical field at 4.2 K ≈ 10 – 11 T
Crystal structure Body-centred cubic (β phase)
Low-temperature behaviour Remains ductile and tough at 4.2 K
Magnetic (normal state) Non-magnetic

Applications of Nb-47Ti Bar & Rod

Industry Applications
Medical imaging MRI and NMR magnet wire
Particle physics Accelerator dipole and quadrupole magnets, detector magnets
Fusion & research Poloidal-field coils, test and laboratory magnets
Cryogenic engineering Machined adaptors, fittings and supports for liquid-helium systems
Industrial Magnetic separation and high-field magnets

Nb-47Ti is not an aerospace structural alloy; aerospace rivets use a different titanium-rich alloy, Ti-45Nb.

Frequently Asked Questions – Nb-47Ti Bar, Rod & Billet

Which ASTM standard covers Nb-47Ti bar and rod?

ASTM B884 covers niobium-titanium alloy billets, bar and rod with 46–48% titanium for superconducting applications. ASTM B391 covers niobium and Nb-Zr ingots and ASTM B393 covers niobium sheet and plate – neither covers Nb-Ti.

What sizes of Nb-47Ti are covered by ASTM B884?

ASTM B884 defines rod as over 13 mm to under 60 mm diameter, bar as 60 mm to under 150 mm, and billet as 150 mm and over.

What hardness does ASTM B884 require?

The average of three hardness readings must be below 170 HV (DPH) in the annealed condition, together with grain-size, ultrasonic and liquid-penetrant requirements.

What is the density of Nb-47Ti?

Nb-47Ti has a density of about 6.0 g/cm³, much lower than pure niobium at 8.57 g/cm³, because of its high titanium content.

Are Nb-47Ti fittings available?

Yes, but they are machined to drawing from ASTM B884 rod and bar – mainly adaptors, couplings and cryogenic components. Nb-47Ti is not produced as standard butt-weld pipe fittings.

What is Nb-47Ti used for?

Mainly as superconducting wire for MRI, NMR and particle-accelerator magnets, and for machined components in liquid-helium cryogenic systems.
