Sanicro 28 Pipes Supplier – ASTM B668 UNS N08028 (Alloy 28)

ASC LLP supplies Sanicro 28 pipes and tubes – the high-alloy austenitic stainless steel also known as Alloy 28, UNS N08028 and W.Nr. 1.4563. We supply seamless ASTM B668 / ASME SB668 Sanicro 28 pipes for phosphoric and sulphuric acid plants, oil & gas production, seawater cooling and other highly corrosive service, with mill test certificates and export packing.

What is Sanicro 28?

Sanicro 28 is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel containing about 27% chromium, 31% nickel, 3.5% molybdenum and 1% copper. This combination gives it excellent resistance to strong acids, pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking – far beyond standard 316L and better than 904L in many acid environments. Its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) is about 39.

Sanicro® 28 is a trade name of Alleima (formerly Sandvik). The same grade is produced by other mills as Alloy 28 / UNS N08028 to ASTM B668, and all material we supply is certified to that specification.

Key Features of Sanicro 28 Pipes

  • Acid resistance: excellent in phosphoric acid (including wet-process acid with fluorides and chlorides) and sulphuric acid.
  • Pitting and crevice resistance: high chromium and molybdenum (PREN ≈ 39) resist attack in chloride-bearing water.
  • Stress corrosion cracking resistance: the high nickel content gives very good resistance to chloride SCC.
  • Sour-service approved: listed in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for oil and gas equipment.
  • Code approved: accepted for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code construction.
  • Good weldability and formability: fully austenitic structure, welded with matching-composition filler.

Applications of Sanicro 28 Pipes

  • Phosphoric acid plants: evaporator tubes, heat exchangers and process piping in wet-process acid production.
  • Sulphuric acid service: piping and heat exchangers handling contaminated or hot sulphuric acid.
  • Oil & gas: production tubing, casing and flowlines in sour (H₂S / CO₂ / chloride) wells.
  • Seawater & cooling water: heat-exchanger tubes and pipework in chloride-rich cooling systems.
  • Chemical & petrochemical: equipment handling fluoride-bearing and mixed-acid media.
  • Power generation: condensers and tubing in aggressive cooling-water environments.

Frequently Asked Questions – Sanicro 28 Pipes

What is Sanicro 28 equivalent to?

Sanicro 28 is equivalent to Alloy 28, UNS N08028, W.Nr. 1.4563 and EN X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4. Seamless pipe and tube are covered by ASTM B668 / ASME SB668 and EN 10216-5.

What is the chemical composition of Sanicro 28?

Per ASTM B668: nickel 29.5–32.5%, chromium 26–28%, molybdenum 3–4%, copper 0.6–1.4%, carbon 0.030% max, with iron as balance. The nominal Sanicro 28 analysis is 27Cr-31Ni-3.5Mo-1Cu.

Is Sanicro 28 a nickel alloy or a stainless steel?

It is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel. Although it contains about 31% nickel, iron is still the main element, which is why its UNS number is in the N08xxx iron-nickel range.

What is the difference between Sanicro 28 and 904L?

Sanicro 28 has more chromium (27% vs 20%) and nickel (31% vs 25%), giving higher pitting resistance (PREN about 39 vs 35) and better resistance to phosphoric acid and chloride stress corrosion cracking. 904L is lower cost and often chosen for sulphuric acid service.

Is Sanicro 28 suitable for sour service?

Yes. UNS N08028 is listed in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, and cold-worked Sanicro 28 tubing is widely used for production tubing in sour oil and gas wells.

What is the density of Sanicro 28?

The density of Sanicro 28 is about 8.0 g/cm³.
