Schedule 80 Carbon Steel Pipe – SCH 80 / XS Wall Thickness, Weight & Pressure Rating

ASC LLP, Mumbai, supplies Schedule 80 carbon steel pipe (SCH 80 / XS) in seamless and ERW construction. Grades include ASTM A106 Grade B, ASTM A53 Grade B, API 5L and A333 Grade 6, from ⅛” to 24″ NB, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates. This page gives the full SCH 80 wall-thickness, weight and pressure-rating charts. See our full carbon steel range.

What is Schedule 80 Carbon Steel Pipe?

“Schedule” is the ASME B36.10M wall-thickness designation for steel pipe. Schedule 80 pipe has a thicker wall than Schedule 40 for the same nominal size. The outside diameter stays the same, so the inside diameter is smaller and the pipe is heavier and takes higher pressure. For example, 2″ SCH 80 has a 5.54 mm (0.218″) wall, against 3.91 mm (0.154″) for SCH 40. Schedule 80 is used where pressure, mechanical loads, threading or corrosion allowance call for extra wall.

Schedule 80 Pipe – Quick Facts

  • Sizes: ⅛” – 24″ NB (10.3 – 609.6 mm OD)
  • Grades: ASTM A106 B / C, A53 B, API 5L B / X42 – X70, A333 Gr 6, A335 P11 / P22 (alloy)
  • Type: seamless (SMLS), ERW, LSAW for large sizes
  • Ends: plain, bevelled (for butt welding) or threaded
  • Certificate: EN 10204 3.1; 3.2 / third-party inspection on request

Schedule 80 vs XS (Extra Strong) – Are They the Same?

Up to 8″ NB, Schedule 80 and XS (Extra Strong / XH) have the same wall thickness. From 10″ upwards they differ: XS stays at 12.70 mm (0.500″), while SCH 80 gets thicker – 15.09 mm at 10″ and 17.48 mm at 12″. Always state both the schedule and the wall thickness on large-size orders.

  • High pressure capacity: roughly 40 – 60% higher than SCH 40 in the same size.
  • Threading: the extra wall leaves more metal under the threads – SCH 80 is often specified for threaded small-bore lines.
  • Corrosion / erosion allowance: more wall to lose before the pressure limit is reached.
  • Corrosion protection: carbon steel is not corrosion-resistant – galvanised, painted or lined pipe is used where needed.

Types of Schedule 80 Pipe We Supply

  • SCH 80 seamless pipe – ASTM A106 Gr B / A53 Type S / API 5L PSL1–PSL2, preferred for high pressure and high temperature.
  • SCH 80 ERW pipe – ASTM A53 Type E and API 5L ERW, economical for general process and structural use.
  • SCH 80 low-temperature pipe – ASTM A333 Grade 6 for service down to −45 °C.
  • Galvanised SCH 80 pipe – A53 hot-dip galvanised for water and outdoor service.
  • SCH 80 alloy pipe – A335 P11 / P22 for high-temperature steam lines, on request.

Frequently Asked Questions – Schedule 80 Carbon Steel Pipe

How thick is Schedule 80 pipe?

Schedule 80 wall thickness depends on pipe size. For example, ½” SCH 80 is 3.73 mm (0.147″), 1″ is 4.55 mm (0.179″), 2″ is 5.54 mm (0.218″), 4″ is 8.56 mm (0.337″) and 6″ is 10.97 mm (0.432″), per ASME B36.10M.

What is the pressure rating of Schedule 80 pipe?

For ASTM A106 Grade B seamless pipe at up to about 204 °C, using the ASME B31.3 formula with 12.5% mill tolerance and no corrosion allowance, approximate ratings are 6,970 psi for ½”, 3,430 psi for 2″, 2,770 psi for 4″ and 2,390 psi for 6″. Ratings are lower at higher temperature, for welded pipe and for threaded pipe.

Is Schedule 80 the same as XS (Extra Strong)?

Yes up to 8″ NB – SCH 80 and XS have the same wall thickness. From 10″ upwards XS stays at 12.70 mm (0.500″), while SCH 80 is thicker (15.09 mm at 10″, 17.48 mm at 12″).

What is the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 pipe?

Both have the same outside diameter, but Schedule 80 has a thicker wall, a smaller inside diameter, more weight and a higher pressure rating. For example, 2″ SCH 40 has a 3.91 mm wall and 5.44 kg/m weight, while 2″ SCH 80 has a 5.54 mm wall and 7.48 kg/m.

Which material grades are available in Schedule 80?

Schedule 80 carbon steel pipe is commonly supplied in ASTM A106 Grade B (seamless), ASTM A53 Grade B (seamless or ERW), API 5L, and ASTM A333 Grade 6 for low temperature, plus A335 alloy grades on request.

Can Schedule 80 pipe be threaded?

Yes. Schedule 80 is often chosen for threaded small-bore pipe because the thicker wall leaves more metal under the threads. The thread depth must be deducted when calculating the pressure rating of threaded pipe.
