35NCD16 Bars: Steel 35NCD16 – 1.6773 – 36NiCrMo16 – FE-PL2108
What is 35NCD16 material? 35NCD16 is a French-designated (AFNOR) nickel-chromium-molybdenum through-hardening alloy steel with about 4% nickel, 1.8% chromium and 0.35% molybdenum. Its European equivalent is 36NiCrMo16 (1.6773) to EN 10083-3. The high nickel content lets it harden right through large sections – even in air – and gives very high strength with excellent toughness and fatigue resistance after quenching and tempering.
ASC LLP supplies 35NCD16 round bars and bar stock in the annealed or quenched-and-tempered condition, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates and ultrasonic testing on request.

Key Features of 35NCD16 Steel
- Very high strength: about 1,000–1,450 MPa tensile after quenching and tempering, depending on section size – higher in low-temper aerospace conditions.
- Deep hardenability: 4% Ni lets large diameters harden through; it can be oil- or air-hardened, reducing distortion and cracking risk.
- Excellent toughness: good impact values at high strength and at low temperatures.
- Fatigue resistance: suits highly stressed, cyclically loaded parts.
- Machinable when annealed: rough-machine soft, then harden and temper.
Applications of 35NCD16 Round Bars
- Aerospace: landing-gear components, actuator parts and highly stressed fittings – see 35NCD16 for landing gear.
- Automotive & motorsport: crankshafts, transmission shafts, gears and axle parts.
- Heavy engineering: large shafts, couplings, hydraulic and mining-equipment parts.
- Defence: high-strength structural and mechanism components.

Frequently Asked Questions – 35NCD16
What is 35NCD16 material?
35NCD16 is a French-designated nickel-chromium-molybdenum through-hardening alloy steel with about 4% Ni, 1.8% Cr and 0.35% Mo. It is used for highly stressed parts such as landing gear, crankshafts and heavy shafts.
What is the equivalent of 35NCD16?
The European equivalent is 36NiCrMo16 (Werkstoff 1.6773) to EN 10083-3, and the aerospace grade is FE-PL2108. The nearest UK grade is 835M30 (EN30B). AISI 4340 is similar in type but has much less nickel and chromium.
What is the chemical composition of 35NCD16?
C 0.32–0.39%, Si 0.40% max, Mn 0.30–0.60%, P 0.030% max, S 0.025% max, Cr 1.60–2.00%, Mo 0.25–0.45% and Ni 3.60–4.10%.
Is 35NCD16 the same as 4340?
No. Both are Ni-Cr-Mo through-hardening steels, but 35NCD16 has about 4% Ni and 1.8% Cr against about 1.8% Ni and 0.8% Cr in 4340, so it hardens through larger sections and can be air-hardened.
