What is ASTM A572 Grade 65 Steel Plate?
ASTM A572 / A572M is the standard specification for high-strength low-alloy columbium (niobium)-vanadium structural steel. It covers five strength grades – 42, 50, 55, 60 and 65 – where the grade number is the minimum yield strength in ksi. Grade 65 is the highest-strength grade in the specification.
Small additions of niobium, vanadium, titanium or nitrogen give A572 steel a fine grain structure, so it achieves high strength with low carbon. The result is a plate that is stronger than plain carbon structural steel such as ASTM A36 (36 ksi yield), while remaining weldable and formable. Using A572 Grade 65 lets designers reduce section thickness and structure weight.

Key Properties of ASTM A572 Grade 65 Plates
- High strength: 65 ksi (450 MPa) minimum yield and 80 ksi (550 MPa) minimum tensile strength – about 80% higher yield than A36.
- Weight saving: the higher strength allows thinner, lighter sections for the same load.
- Weldability: low carbon and micro-alloying give good weldability with standard structural welding practice.
- Formability and machinability: can be cut, bent, drilled and machined with normal shop equipment.
- Toughness: supplementary Charpy V-notch impact testing can be specified where notch toughness matters.
Is ASTM A572-65 Corten (Weathering) Steel?
No. ASTM A572 Grade 65 is often searched for as “A572-65 corten steel”, but A572 is not a weathering steel. It does not contain the copper, chromium and nickel additions that let corten steel form a protective rust patina, so it must be painted, galvanized or otherwise coated for outdoor exposure.
If you need a 65 ksi plate with weathering (atmospheric corrosion) resistance, the correct specification is ASTM A871 Grade 65 plate. Other weathering grades we supply include ASTM A588, ASTM A709 Grade 50W, ASTM A242 and ASTM A606 Type 4. See all Corten steel plates.

Frequently Asked Questions – ASTM A572 Grade 65
What is ASTM A572 Grade 65 steel?
ASTM A572 Grade 65 is a high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) columbium-vanadium structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 65 ksi (450 MPa) and minimum tensile strength of 80 ksi (550 MPa). It is the highest-strength grade in the ASTM A572 specification.
Is A572 Grade 65 the same as Corten steel?
No. A572 Grade 65 is not a weathering steel and needs a protective coating outdoors. The weathering (Corten-type) equivalent with 65 ksi yield is ASTM A871 Grade 65.
What is the maximum thickness of A572 Grade 65 plate?
ASTM A572 limits Grade 65 plate to 1-1/4 inches (32 mm). Thicker plates are available in Grade 50 (up to 4 inches) and Grade 42 (up to 6 inches).
What is the difference between A572 Grade 50 and Grade 65?
Grade 65 has a minimum yield of 65 ksi versus 50 ksi for Grade 50, and a minimum tensile of 80 ksi versus 65 ksi. Grade 50 is available in thicker plate and is more widely stocked; Grade 65 is chosen where weight saving matters.
Is ASTM A572 Grade 65 weldable?
Yes. Its low carbon and micro-alloyed chemistry give good weldability using standard structural welding procedures. Preheat may be needed for thicker sections, following AWS D1.1 or the project welding specification.
What is the European equivalent of A572 Grade 65?
The closest European equivalents are S450J0 to EN 10025-2 and S460M / S460N to EN 10025-4 and EN 10025-3. These are approximate matches, so compare chemistry, thickness and impact requirements before substituting.
