A513 1020 DOM Tubes – ASTM A513 Type 5 Drawn Over Mandrel Tubing

ASC LLP, Mumbai, supplies A513 1020 DOM tubes – ASTM A513 Type 5, drawn-over-mandrel carbon steel mechanical tubing in SAE 1020. Tubes come in round and other shapes, as-drawn or stress-relieved, cut to length, with mill test certificates. See our DOM tubes and carbon steel tubes ranges.

What is A513 1020 DOM Tubing?

DOM stands for Drawn Over Mandrel. The tube starts as electric-resistance-welded (ERW) tube made from 1020 strip. It is normalised or annealed, then cold drawn through a die over a mandrel, which works the outside and inside at the same time. This gives:

  • close OD, ID and wall tolerances,
  • a smooth, clean bore, and
  • higher strength than as-welded tube.

The weld line is still there, but drawing and heat treatment refine it until it is hard to distinguish from the parent metal. In ASTM A513 – the specification for ERW carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing – DOM is Type 5. “1020” is the steel grade: a low-carbon steel with about 0.20% carbon.

ASTM A513 Tube Types – Where DOM Fits

A513 Type Description
Type 1 (1a / 1b) As-welded from hot-rolled steel (1a mill scale, 1b pickled & oiled)
Type 2 As-welded from cold-rolled steel
Types 3 & 4 As-welded from coated steel
Type 5 Drawn over mandrel (DOM) – closest tolerances, smooth ID
Type 6 Sink drawn (drawn without a mandrel)

For as-welded 1020 tube see ASTM A513 1020 tubes.

Features of 1020 DOM Tubing

  • Close tolerances: tighter OD and ID tolerances than as-welded tube, so it often needs little or no machining.
  • Smooth ID: suitable for hydraulic cylinders after honing or skiving.
  • Higher strength: cold drawing raises yield and tensile strength well above as-welded 1020.
  • Uniform wall and concentricity: the mandrel controls the wall all the way round.
  • Weldable and machinable: low carbon makes 1020 easy to weld, bend and machine.

Applications of A513 1020 DOM Tubes

  • Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder barrels, piston rods (hollow) and rams
  • Automotive axles, drive shafts, steering and suspension parts, roll cages
  • Bushings, sleeves, spacers, bearing races and rollers
  • Agricultural, construction and material-handling machinery
  • Machine frames, telescopic tubes and precision structural parts

DOM tube is ordered by actual OD × wall (or OD × ID), not by nominal pipe size. Typical range: about ¼” – 12″ OD, walls about 0.035″ – 0.750″. Weights are calculated for carbon steel. Other sizes and metric sizes on request.

1020 DOM Mechanical Properties

Condition Yield min. Tensile min. Elongation min. Hardness (HRB)
As-welded (A513 Type 1, for comparison) 38 ksi (262 MPa) 52 ksi (359 MPa) 12% 62
Normalised 35 ksi (241 MPa) 50 ksi (345 MPa) 25% 75
DOM – mandrel drawn (as drawn) 60 ksi (414 MPa) 70 ksi (483 MPa) 5% 80
DOM – drawn & stress relieved 55 ksi (379 MPa) 65 ksi (448 MPa) 10% 75

Minimum values as listed in the ASTM A513 property tables for Grade 1020; tests are made when specified on the order. Typical 1020 DOM is stronger – about 70 ksi yield / 80 ksi tensile as drawn and about 60 / 70 ksi stress-relieved. Actual results are shown on the mill test certificate. Stress-relieved DOM is easier to machine and bend; as-drawn DOM gives the highest strength.

How DOM Tubing is Made

  1. Strip: 1020 steel coil is slit to width.
  2. ERW: the strip is roll-formed and the seam is welded by electric resistance; the outside flash is removed.
  3. Heat treatment: the welded tube is normalised or annealed to soften it and refine the weld zone.
  4. Cold drawing: after pickling and lubricating, the tube is pulled through a die over a mandrel to final size.
  5. Finishing: stress relief (if ordered), straightening, cutting, testing and inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions – A513 1020 DOM Tubes

What is A513 1020 DOM tubing?

A513 1020 DOM is ASTM A513 Type 5 mechanical tubing in SAE 1020 low-carbon steel. It is made by welding the tube from strip (ERW), heat treating it, and then cold drawing it through a die over a mandrel to achieve close tolerances, a smooth bore and higher strength.

What does DOM stand for?

DOM stands for Drawn Over Mandrel. The welded tube is pulled through a die while a mandrel supports the inside, sizing the OD, ID and wall at the same time.

Is DOM tubing seamless?

No. DOM tubing starts as electric-resistance-welded tube. Cold drawing and heat treatment refine the weld so it is nearly uniform with the parent metal, but it is not seamless. Seamless tubing is made to ASTM A519.

What is the yield strength of 1020 DOM tubing?

Per the ASTM A513 property tables, minimum yield is 60 ksi (414 MPa) for 1020 DOM as drawn and 55 ksi (379 MPa) after stress relieving. Typical values are higher – about 70 ksi as drawn and 60 ksi stress-relieved – and actual results are shown on the mill test certificate.

What is the difference between 1020 and 1026 DOM tubing?

1026 contains more carbon (0.22–0.28%) and manganese (0.60–0.90%) than 1020, so it has higher strength. 1020 is slightly easier to weld and form.

What is the difference between DOM and ERW tubing?

ERW (A513 Type 1 or 2) is used as-welded. DOM (Type 5) is ERW tube that has been cold drawn over a mandrel, giving tighter tolerances, a smoother inside surface and higher strength.
