We supply Custom 465 (UNS S46500) round bar, bar stock, hex, flat, square and forged bar to AMS 5936, ASTM A564 and ASTM F899 – in the solution-treated condition ready for machining and aging to H950 or H1000 – with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates.
What is Custom 465 Stainless Steel?
Custom 465 (UNS S46500, often called 465 stainless steel) is a martensitic, precipitation-hardening stainless steel with about 11.5% chromium, 11% nickel, 1% molybdenum and 1.6% titanium. Titanium is the key: during aging it forms very fine nickel-titanium precipitates that give Custom 465 tensile strengths of about 1,600–1,770 MPa (230–256 ksi) – much higher than 17-4PH – while keeping good fracture toughness, ductility and stress-corrosion cracking resistance.
It is supplied soft (solution treated, Condition A) so it can be machined easily, then given a single low-temperature aging treatment – usually H950 for maximum strength or H1000 for the best balance of strength, toughness and SCC resistance.
Custom 465® is a registered trademark of CRS Holdings, Inc., a subsidiary of Carpenter Technology Corporation.

Key Properties of Custom 465
- Ultra-high strength: about 1,765 MPa (256 ksi) tensile in H950 – among the strongest stainless steels available.
- Toughness: notch tensile ratio of about 1.4–1.5 and good Charpy values, so it resists brittle fracture at high strength.
- Corrosion and SCC resistance: general corrosion resistance close to 17-4PH, with better stress-corrosion cracking resistance than other ultra-high-strength steels.
- Easy heat treatment: machine in Condition A, then age once at 510–538 °C – minimal distortion and no quench after aging.
- Magnetic: as a martensitic steel, Custom 465 is magnetic in all conditions.
Applications of Custom 465 Bars
- Aerospace: landing-gear components, actuators, flap and slat tracks, structural fittings, shafts and high-strength fasteners.
- Medical: surgical instruments to ASTM F899 – orthopaedic and spinal drivers, distractors and dental tools.
- Oil & gas: downhole tools, valve stems and high-strength shafts.
- Defence & other: firearm components, high-performance tooling and sports equipment.

Custom 465 Heat Treatment (H950 & H1000)
| Step | Process | Purpose |
| 1. Solution treat (Condition A) | About 982 °C (1,800 °F), then cool rapidly | Softest condition – bar is normally supplied and machined like this |
| 2. Refrigerate | About −73 °C (−100 °F) for 8 hours, then warm to room temperature | Completes transformation to martensite before aging |
| 3a. Age to H950 | 510 °C (950 °F) for 4 hours, air cool | Maximum strength (≈ 49.5 HRC) |
| 3b. Age to H1000 | 538 °C (1,000 °F) for 4 hours, air cool | Higher toughness and SCC resistance (≈ 47.5 HRC) |
Always follow the heat-treatment requirements of the applicable specification (AMS 2759/3 or the customer drawing). Allow for a small dimensional change on aging when finish-machining before heat treatment.

Custom 465 vs 17-4PH vs 15-5PH vs 13-8Mo
| Grade | Typical peak tensile strength | Main advantage |
| Custom 465 (H950) | ≈ 1,765 MPa (256 ksi) | Highest strength with good toughness and SCC resistance |
| PH 13-8Mo (H950) | ≈ 1,550 MPa (225 ksi) | Very good transverse toughness |
| {a(“/17-4ph-round-bars/”,”17-4PH”)} / 15-5PH (H900) | ≈ 1,380 MPa (200 ksi) | Lower cost, widely available |
Engineers often move from 17-4PH or 13-8Mo to Custom 465 when they need a smaller, lighter part at the same load, or better stress-corrosion cracking resistance than low-alloy steels such as 4340 or 300M. For even higher strength in a non-stainless alloy, see MP35N; for hot sections, see Inconel 718 and A286.
